Businesses across the US are facing unprecedented challenges trying to find enough workers to fill job openings. The latest data (May 2022) shows that we have 11.2 million job openings in the U.S., and nearly six million unemployed workers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One aspect of the ongoing labor shortage is that many women have not returned to work in the wake of Covid. A million women are out of the labor force.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before Covid, 59% of eligible women were at work in the US. In 2019, 72% of women with children were working. 93.3% of men with children were participating in the pre-pandemic workforce.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where are the women?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While some have started their own businesses, many are caring for their children. The childcare industry suffered greatly from pandemic lockdowns and has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels, impacting working parents who rely on childcare services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two-income families had little choice but to sacrifice a job, and possibly delay career advancement. It seems that more mothers opted to stay home with their children. One third of families surveyed said that income level didn\u2019t determine who stayed home. Rather, it was the parent who was deemed to be better at childcare who stayed home. These families determine that the mother was the better caregiver. Thus, there are now fewer women in the labor force.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can businesses do in these circumstances?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same Harvard Business Review article suggested that the nature of work is changing. People want flexibility and freedom. The future of work is less confined to the office and the traditional 9-5 schedule. It also suggested that businesses may need to provide childcare benefits to retain employees because it is more expensive to recruit new ones. Moreover, if businesses can provide onsite or local childcare, they will have happy, productive and loyal employees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
